NSK Accredited with the Eco-ship Mark

The Eco-ship Mark

Tokyo, Japan, November 29, 2009 – NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Norio Otsuka) has been accredited with the Eco-ship mark as a company endeavoring to reduce the burden on the environment through modal shift.

NSK's shipping company, NSK Logistics Co., Ltd., was also accredited with the Eco-ship mark as a distribution company.

Since 2007, NSK has promoted an efficient modal shift from land to sea for the shipping of products from the Gunma area to Kitakyushu and was highly rated for its resulting achievements in greatly reducing CO2 emissions. In 2008, the company reduced CO2 emissions by 425 tons over the year.

Modal Shift
The reduction of CO2 emissions by encouraging a modal shift away from road and towards sea and rail modes of transport, which permit the shipping of large quantities of goods.
Eco-ship Mark Accreditation System
The system was introduced in July 2008 by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Maritime Bureau and the Eco-ship and Modal Shift Project Organizing Committee which is made up of representatives from maritime businesses. It aims to promote modal shift from overland to sea, which enables large reductions in CO2 emissions and energy use when shipping goods.
