NSK to Exhibit at SENSOR NETWORK TECHNOLOGY EXPO (SENSOR EXPO JAPAN 2015)

Exhibit of Dye-Sensitized Solar Panels with Superior Hue, Transparency and Design

NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Toshihiro Uchiyama) will exhibit its products and technologies at SENSOR NETWORK TECHNOLOGY EXPO (SENSOR EXPO JAPAN 2015),*1 to be held at Tokyo Big Sight (Koto-Ward, Tokyo) in Japan from Wednesday, September 16 to Friday, September 18, 2015.

NSK has developed an electrolyte*2 with greater transparency than conventional units, thereby making it possible to produce dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) panels that feature a superior hue, transparency and design. At this exhibition, NSK will introduce a prototype wireless sensor node with a built-in DSSC panel to customers in the sensor network industry with the intention of obtaining wide feedback and assessments toward practical applications. In this way, NSK is contributing to the realization of the Internet of Things.

*1 A specialized exhibition related to sensor networks, wireless solutions, location information, and sensing technology. The exhibition, which is organized by The Nihon Kogyo Shimbun Co., Ltd., is a place for lively technical consultation, information exchange, meetings, and business negotiation, toward the realization of the Internet of Things.
*2 Electrolytes carry electrons between the pigment and the electrodes in a DSSC and are therefore an important component that determines the performance of solar cells.

Features of DSSC Panel

DSSC are different from mainstream silicon and compound semiconductor solar cells in that they can contribute to hue and design. Also, DSSC are better than conventional solar cells at generating power under conditions of low incidence angle dependency and low illumination. They are the next generation of solar cells with potential applications such as use, for example, in power supply for sensors used to light interior posters and stained glass.

NSK developed this new electrolyte, which has a greater level of transparency than conventional units, by applying electrochemical technology fostered through its development of core material technology and organic material technology fostered through the development of lubrication technology. It then applied these technologies in the development of DSSC. NSK has thus made it possible to produce DSSC panels that provide superior hue, transparency and design.

DSSC panels made with the newly developed electrolyte were exhibited at PV EXPO 2015–The 8th International Photovoltaic Power Generation Expo, and they received positive feedback from many visitors.

Exhibit Products

NSK will exhibit DSSC panels that have superior hue, transparency, and design as well as prototype wireless sensor nodes with those solar panels built in. The company hopes to receive wide feedback and assessments from customers of the sensor network industry toward the development of practical applications.
