NSK to Exhibit at JSAE Automotive Engineering Exposition 2009

Tokyo, Japan, May 20, 2009 – NSK Ltd. (NSK; Headquarters: Tokyo, Japan; President and CEO: Seiichi Asaka) will exhibit at the JSAE Automotive Engineering Exposition 2009, which is to be held at PACIFICO Yokohama (Minato Mirai, Nishi Ward, Yokohama) from May 20 to 23.

With improving the fuel efficiency and safety of automobiles as its theme, NSK will exhibit its latest products that contribute to the technologies of automobiles and motorcycles, such as technologies that realize size, weight, and torque (friction) reduction.

Principal exhibits

Hub unit bearings
NSK's bearings for automobile wheels have a built-in high-performance seal that supports wheels, which are exposed to a wide range of severe driving conditions such as water and mud, ensuring high durability and reliability. NSK is promoting not only reductions in the size, weight, and torque (friction) of bearings, but also improvements to their functionality by the integration of bearings with peripheral parts such as sensors. NSK will exhibit its hub unit bearings, including our new product for disc brakes that integrates a brake caliper mounting brake with the bearing. In addition, NSK has developed its own resin material and adhesion technology and will exhibit its plastic magnet encoder for wheel speed detection that can be incorporated into hub unit bearings used in extreme environments.
Electric power steering (EPS)
Electric power steering systems have facilitated the production of more environmentally friendly cars with reduced output and increased fuel economy. Precise motor control enables safe and comfortable steering. At this exhibition, NSK will exhibit its latest high-output column-type electric power steering, which, owing to the integration of mechatronics (e.g. ECU) with the brush motor, is the shortest, most lightweight and compact of its type in the world.
Drive train
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) enables the engine to always operate optimally, providing higher fuel economy and driving performance. At this exhibition, NSK will exhibit its half toroidal CVT for front-engine front-drive vehicles. A more compact and lower-cost transmission than NSK's conventional CVTs, this CVT can be applied not only to rear-drive vehicles but also to front-drive vehicles.
Motorcycle technology
NSK has developed the world's first compact, lightweight ball screw for motorcycle brake systems that offers both high reliability and high responsiveness.

With this world-class technology, NSK will make further efforts to contribute to the creation of an automobile society that is safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly.
