NSK's Approach : Reducing Energy Use in Operations, and Empowering People to Save Energy with Environmentally Friendly Products
The NSK Group is striving to reduce CO2 emissions from its business activities through energysaving efforts and the conversion to clean energies. It also contributes to the fight against global warming by creating environmentally friendly products that reduce the CO2 generated when machines move.

Initiatives at Plants
By promoting efficient use of energy and conversion to cleaner energy sources, the Group is combating global warming through the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Figure 1: Main Initiatives to Reduce CO2 Emissions
Conversion to Cleaner Energy
The NSK Group is promoting the conversion to low-CO2 emitting natural gas and electricity in order to reduce the use of fuels that emit large amounts of CO2 (fuel oil and kerosene), a factor in global warming.
Promotion of Energy Conservation Activities
The NSK Group is increasing the efficiency of its production lines by improving maintenance and by reducing waste and energy use.
Conversion to High-efficient Equipments
The NSK Group is actively promoting initiatives for efficient energy use.
Working groups have been established and activities initiated to find solutions to problems shared by all the NSK Group plants. Such solutions include energy conservation for facilities such as air conditioners and air compressors. Information about the initiatives implemented at each plant is shared, and effective solutions are then extended to other plants.
Use of alternative energy
NSK report Initiatives at Plants in detail in the CSR report every year.
Initiatives in Distribution
The NSK Group is changing its modes of transportation and improving transportation efficiency in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of its logistics. the NSK Group is striving to reduce CO2 emissions by improving transportation and load efficiency of parts and products transported within and outside Japan, and by switching to modes of transportation that have a lower impact on the environment
Environmental Logistics Policy
1. To reduce CO2 in the transportation process
- Improve loading efficiency through integration of product and procurement logistics for product quality and environmental protection
- Reduce number of vehicles and kilometers traveled, based on introduction of joint transportation and milk-run deliveries
- Promote eco-driving and switch to low-emissions vehicles
- Comply with revised Act Concerning the Rational Use of Energy
2. To actively protect the environment
- Continue to operate comprehensive management system at NSK Logistics
Shifting to Efficient Modes of Transportation
The NSK Group is implementing a modal shift—i.e., a shift away from trucks, to trains and ships, which generate fewer CO2 emissions – while adjusting for transportation lead times and costs. We are also working to transport loads more efficiently.
Promotion of Joint Transportation
The NSK Group is contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions by improving logistical efficiency through “joint transportation”: combining the transport of products and parts on one trip. The Group is introducing “milk runs” making rounds to pick up cargo from several suppliers in a particular region. It also makes efficient use of vehicles on the return journey after delivering products to customers, making more intensive use of vehicles and carrying loads more efficiently. NSK report Initiatives at Distribution in detail in the CSR report every year.
