NSK wins the Technical Development Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan

NSK has won the Technical Development Award of the 50th Convention of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc., judged and presented by members of the society. The award ceremony was held at Pacifico Yokohama on Thursday, May 25, 2000.

The Award of the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, won this year by NSK, was established in 1951 to promote automotive engineering and technology.

Here are the explains the details of the award:
Awarded Item Development of Double Cavity Toroidal CVT
Developers and Partners Kazuhiko Sugano (Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.)
Haruyoshi Kumura (Nissan Motor Co., ltd.)
Toru Takeuchi (Jatco TransTechnology Ltd.)
Kazushi Hata (Idemitsu Kosan, Co., Ltd.)
Hisashi Machida (NSK, Ltd.)
Overview and rationale for the ward The above-named developers and partners have developed a Traction Drive-Type Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which can be mounted on 3000 cc-class vehicles. Up to this point, CVT has optimally matched engine characteristics with driving conditions to reduce energy consumption, while the conventional steel-belt CVT remains limited in terms of transmission torque. The awarded CVT is intended to be mounted on high-torque FR type veihcles and exhibits maximum transmission by the design locating Half-Toroidal CVT elements diagonally. Since the traction drive transmits power by leveraging oil film shearing resistance, development efforts focused on a design and control technique to optimally configure the CVT, along with introducing a new type of traction oil with excellent traction capacity as well as CVT materials exhibiting high surface pressure. The long-term collaboration of the developers resulted in the successful market debut of this advanced CVT. The all-new materials and techniques have significantly contributed to automotive transmission technology.

The JASE (Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan, Inc.) was founded on February 1, 1947 as a non-profit organization with the aim of "contributing to progress in science and culture, expanding the industrial economy and improving citizens' lives through advancement in automotive technologies" (as specified in Article 4 of the Articles of Association). In June of the same year it was authorized by the Ministries of Education, International Trade and Industry (formerly Commerce and Industry), and Transport.
